Drop the Dead Donkey – Gunge Plunge scene

I came across a longer version of this scene, in which snooty, suited Sally Smedley (played by Victoria Wicks) goes on children’s TV to promote her new book.

I’d always assumed that the scene was inspired by GYOB, but it turns out that it aired in 1990 – a year before GYOB began (corrected – see my comment below). Was there an earlier show, that I am too young to remember, that had this kind of gunge dunk?

Wherever the idea for the gunging mechanism came from, the general gist of the setup has occurred on many shows in many different eras.

Presenter: So, have you enjoyed your time here today?

Celeb: I’ve had a fantastic time! I’m a big fan of this kind of puerile entertainment, I love getting up early on a Saturday, and I’m definitely not here because my record label wants to shift more copies of that crappy song I mime to.

Presenter: Glad to hear it. And the best part of your visit is yet to come. It’s time for the Cage/Stop the Snot/the Thank You Desk/Creamy Muck Muck!

Celeb: Er… what’s that?

Oh.
